Esta semana recibí un libro especial.

Derek Jarman (1942-1994) fue un destacado director de cine, escenógrafo, pintor, escritor y poeta.

Hacia el final de su vida se dedicó a crear un jardín, en una playa vecina a la central nuclear en Dungeness (Kent).

Las condiciones del lugar eran inhóspitas - un terreno de piedrecilla, infértil y expuesto al viento marino. Derek Jarman transformó el paisaje, creando un jardín con una variedad de plantas autóctonas junto con otras especies, como lavandas, santolinas y Eschscholzia califórnica (Dedal de Oro).

El jardín de Derek Jarman se ha transformado en un ícono en la jardinería británica.

Para él, Prospect Cottage fue su refugio 'infinito' - un espacio íntimo sin confines, ni límite definido – el jardín es completamente abierto, su horizonte es el Canal de La Mancha y el mar eterno.

"It is a weird and wonderful place, but in many ways humble: a small house, a tiny garden, yet the maker showed us all how wild and brilliant our own spaces can be if we're prepared to look sympathetically at the landscape around us, to make room for the flotsam and weeds in life as much as the jewels."
